Senegal’s Train Express Regional (TER) represents a significant advancement in West Africa’s transportation infrastructure, positioning the nation as a leader in modern rail transit on the continent. Inaugurated in December 2021, the TER connects Dakar to Diamniadio over a 36-kilometer route, with plans to extend an additional 19 kilometers to Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD), totaling a 55-kilometer network upon completion.
The TER operates with a fleet of 15 four-car Coradia Polyvalent trainsets, manufactured by Alstom. These dual-mode trains, capable of running on both diesel and electric power at 25 kV, can reach speeds up to 160 km/h (99 mph). Each trainset is 72 meters long and accommodates up to 531 passengers across first and second classes.
While rail transport in Africa has historically been underdeveloped, recent years have seen a surge in investments aimed at modernizing and expanding rail networks. The TER stands out as one of the continent’s most advanced urban rail projects, offering a level of service and efficiency comparable to systems in more developed regions.
In comparison, Morocco inaugurated Africa’s first high-speed rail line, the Al Boraq, in 2018, connecting Tangier to Casablanca with trains reaching speeds up to 320 km/h.
Additionally, Tanzania has embarked on the development of an electric railway network, aiming to set the country on a greener path. youtube.com
Globally, railway electrification is a hallmark of advanced transportation systems. As of 2012, electrified tracks accounted for nearly one-third of total railway tracks worldwide. Countries like Switzerland boast fully electrified networks, while nations such as China and India have extensive electrified rail systems spanning tens of thousands of kilometers.
Despite the progress represented by the TER, challenges remain. The project’s implementation faced protests from residents seeking compensation for land acquisition.

The TER, a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at modernizing the country’s transportation system, was inaugurated in December 2021 under former President Macky Sall. Since assuming office in April 2024, President Faye has focused on various national issues, including economic reforms and governance. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s tenure represents a transformative period in Senegalese politics, characterized by a commitment to anti-corruption, economic reform, and national sovereignty. His administration continues to navigate the complexities of governance, striving to fulfill the aspirations of the Senegalese populace.
Looking ahead, the African Union’s Agenda 2063 envisions an integrated high-speed railway network connecting major cities across the continent. The TER serves as a model for future projects, demonstrating the potential benefits of modern rail systems in enhancing urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion, and contributing to economic development.
Senegal’s Train Express Regional not only elevates the country’s transportation infrastructure but also sets a benchmark for rail development in Africa. Its successful implementation underscores the importance of modern, efficient, and sustainable transit solutions in the continent’s ongoing development narrative.
